How long have you worked for Measom Freer?
I joined Measom Freer in 2005 as a quality inspector and was promoted to quality control manager in 2019. Previous to Measom Freer I worked for a foodservice business called RF Brookes Ltd, who were part of Premier Foods. I worked there for 20 years as a production planner and technical administrator which led to my career in quality control.
What are the main responsibilities in your role? What does a normal day look like?
I love that no two days are the same and I wear lots of different hats!
I’m responsible for maintaining the company’s quality, health & safety and environmental management systems. I ensure that our procedures are up to date, and our products and machines are checked to maintain the highest quality standards.
You will either find me working on my PC carrying out systems administration or in the factory conducting routine quality control (QC) checks in production.
I work with our quality inspector Kayleigh who joined earlier this year, she is a huge support and together we make sure everything runs smoothly.
What can be the most challenging parts of the job? How do you address these challenges?
Striking a balance between customer satisfaction, product quality and production challenges can be difficult.
I make decisions based on my industry experience and knowledge and draw upon the support of my colleagues for wider continuous improvements and actions.
A huge benefit of working with us is our tool room and experienced machine setters. As we are all under one roof, we can sort issues and make adjustments much easier by making bespoke tools on site for our customers.
What qualifications or training do you draw upon in the role?
Along with 39 years’ experience in the manufacturing sector and 20 of those in the food sector, I have achieved a number of professional qualifications including internal auditor training, IOSHH in health & safety together with numerous British Safety Council courses. I’m also a first aider and mental health first aider.
What do you enjoy about working for Measom Freer?
It’s a small close-knit team. I have the opportunity to share my ideas and get involved in all aspects of the business.
What is the work-related accomplishment in your career to date that you are most proud of?
I’m proud of succeeding in keeping the company compliant with its ISO 14001 and 9001 responsibilities, with our most recent audit receiving a clean sheet on no non-conformances.
In my role as quality manager, maintaining our ISO standards is something we work on all year round to achieve and I’m proud of that as it’s a huge undertaking.
What is the best bit of advice you would give somebody starting at Measom Freer?
There will always be someone here willing and open to listen to your new ideas. As a business we champion continuous improvement and are not afraid of change. It’s important to share new ideas so that the business can continue to innovate and grow.
How would you describe the business in three words?
Fair, honest and consistent.
What are your interests outside of work?
I have a busy family life, and I am mother to two daughters. I’m also a dog mom to mini-Schnauzer’s Freddie who is 12 and Darcie 8 (whom I recently rescued and adopted). I also enjoy the odd Zumba class and catching up with friends over a nice coffee.
