What is extrusion blow moulding?
At our factory, in Leicester, UK, we use extrusion blow moulding to manufacture bottles. This process involves inflating molten plastic into a hollow mould cavity.
This technique is widely used to produce a vast range of plastic products, from simple boston bottles to technical mouldings. Its advantage over stretch blow moulding is the forming of handles for parts, such as bottles requiring handles like jerry cans and easy weight alterations for customers filling chemical products.

Measom Freer’s extrusion blow moulding process:
1. Extruding the parison: a hollow tube of molten plastic, called a parison, is extruded from a die head.
2. Knife cut: the mould moves across and closes to compress the hollow tube’s top and bottom. A knife cuts the parison and the mould moves to the blowing station.
3. Blowing: at the blowing station, compressed air is forced into the parison through a blow pin, inflating it and pushing the parison to the edges of the mould cavity.
4. Cooling: Chilled water is circulated around the mould and solidifies the plastic to its new shape. The mould opens and the parts are transferred to the next stage.
5. Trimming and deflash: the excess plastic above and below the part is pushed off by a punch. Spin trimmers may be required to achieve specific neck tolerances.
6. Regrind: in a closed loop system all of the excess plastic is granulated and mixed back into the same machine.
7. Ejection: the finished product is then transferred to a conveyor where it can be inspected, leak tested and tray packed ready for the customer.
