How to raise awareness - in more ways than one!

Look at your waste and what do you see?

One thing we’ll bet you don’t see, is an opportunity – but it could be. And in more ways than one!

18 March 2021 marked Global Recycling Day, with the Global Recycling Foundation imploring us to rethink our approach to waste – seeing it not as waste in fact, but as opportunity. And, here at Measom Freer, this idea of ‘opportunity struck a real chord with us. The notion of seeing plastic not just as a commodity to be chucked aside or - if it’s lucky - tossed into the recycle bin, but as something that can be repurposed and reused.

More than this though…it also got us thinking about ways you could get involved with awareness campaigns such as this, to raise the profile not just of the important messages of their cause but of your own commitment to the environment. And, as an added bonus, your brand too!

Well the good news is – it’s easy to get involved! And even better, it doesn’t need to take tons of time and effort, just a little creative thinking.

Here are few ideas to get you started…

How to promote recycling - and your business!

  • Run a recycling competition – everyone loves a competition, right? You could take this in all kinds of directions but something as simple as who can think of the most inventive alternative use for your product’s empty container? Who can turn a plastic bottle into the most artistic masterpiece (you get the idea)? Offer a tempting prize and you’re sure to attract people’s interest.

  • Be seasonal – latch on to what’s happening in the world right now, be current, topical – and fun! For example, in March and April you could use your blog or a message on your packaging to promote Easter-themed crafts and an alternative ‘after life’ for your plastic – bunny planters or Easter baskets anyone? Be sure to tap into any local, national and global recycling initiatives and support them with your own campaigns.

  • Get social – social media is your friend. If you want to get your message out there and grow awareness and involvement you need to be seen. If you don’t already have accounts with the likes of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, it’s worth setting them up. They offer an easy way to run promotional campaigns, interact with your customers and to get your messages out there.

  • Involve the kids – your product may be targeting an older demographic, but hey, if you offer something to entertain the kids, everyone’s a winner - so don’t forget to cover all ages with your recycling ideas.

  • Go big – consider offering larger containers and refills but educate buyers on why these make a great alternative, not just for their pocket but for the environment too. You could even offer a discount on switching to larger bottles.

  • Run your own recycling scheme – are you a local business? Could you connect with local people by offering to recycle for them? Talking to customers is also a great way of generating future plans for promotions.

This is a perfect opportunity to get to know your buyers whilst also demonstrating your commitment to the environment and going the extra mile.
